Ok this is totally unrelated to Iran but just too f'ing outrageous to not mention: Did you know that there is a new prescription drug for growing longer eyelashes? Yes, Latisse will make you grow "longer, fuller, darker" lashes.
Great. Who really needs to find a treatment for CANCER or something silly like that when humanity is threatened by the scourge of "inadequate lashes"?
Thank god our pharma companies have their priorities straight on what to do with the money they screw out of little old ladies who have to pay $5 a pill for medicine instead of eating food.
By one estimate, severely disabled elderly persons spend more than half their out-of-pocket health expenditures on outpatient prescription drugs. What makes this financial burden all the more daunting is that half the elderly population has no insurance coverage for prescription drugs.
And
[T]he average prices of dozens of brand-name prescription drugs widely used by elderly Americans have risen more than twice as fast as general inflation for the third year in a row...The cost for prescription drugs for the elderly continues to escalate at a pace that far exceeds the rate of inflation.
The pharmaceutical industry spent $1.1 billion on television ads in 1999 according to figures from IMS Health. This represented a 70 % increase over ad spending in 1998...
The brunt of the spending increase was borne by elderly women. The average price for a prescription last year rose 18% for women age 70-79 and 20 % for women in the 80 and older category.
But hey, those elderly women can at least have fuller, thicker eyelashes.
(All I want a sailboat to escape from this nonsense.)
