I was perusing a book on Sufi poetry entitled "Perfume of the Desert" by Andrew Harvey and came across this Molla Nasreddin story that I thought described political populism very well:
Nasruddin addressed a large crowd and shouted: "Do you want knowledge without ordeal, truth without lies, attainment without any hard work, and progress without any sacrifice?"
Everyone yelled: "Yes!"
"Marvelous!" said Nasruddin, "I do also, and if I ever find out how to manage it, I'll be thrilled to let you know."
