Well that was hardly the first time that officials proved they're actually ignorant of such a basic fact.

Most American officials I’ve interviewed don’t have a clue. That includes not just intelligence and law enforcement officials, but also members of Congress who have important roles overseeing our spy agencies. How can they do their jobs without knowing the basics?
(Sadly, this whole thing reminds me of a dear cousin of mine who is a graduate of one of the finest universities in the United States, and who asked me "Who won World War II?" -- I kid you not. I assured him that the Mongols won that one.)
